Choose your test length
1 Minute Typing Test
The classic speed check. Quick to take and easy to compare.
3 Minute Typing Test
Long enough to show the speed you can keep up, not just your best burst.
5 Minute Typing Test
A real test of stamina and focus, closer to everyday typing.
How this typing test works
Pick a test length and start typing the words on screen. The clock only begins once you press your first letter, so you never lose time getting your hands in place. Space takes you on to the following word, and Backspace fixes a mistake, even in an earlier word.
When the time runs out, you see your speed and accuracy straight away. There is nothing to sign up for, and what you type stays in your browser.
Find the letters that slow you down
A speed score tells you where you stand, but not what to work on. So your result also names the letters you mistyped most often, counting mistakes you went back and fixed. Your trouble letters might be "e" one week and "r" the next, and practising them is a more direct route to improving than simply taking more tests.
How your typing speed is calculated
Speed here means words per minute, or WPM. Because words vary in length, a standard "word" counts as 5 characters, including spaces. This test takes the correct characters in your finished text, divides them by 5, and then divides by the minutes taken.
For example, if you finish a 30 second test with 200 correct characters, your speed is 200 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.5, which is 80 WPM.
Your result also shows raw WPM, which uses every character in your finished text, right or wrong. A large gap between the two means mistakes are costing you speed.
What your accuracy score means
Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct. A mistake you fix no longer lowers your WPM, but it still lowers your accuracy, because you had to spend time correcting it. That makes accuracy a good measure of how cleanly you type.
Getting faster, step by step
- Aim for accuracy first. Slow down until most of your keystrokes are right, because correcting mistakes takes longer than avoiding them.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking down at the keys breaks your rhythm and makes you lose your place.
- Use the same finger for each letter. Consistent finger use and steady hands matter more than the number of fingers you use.
- Practise little and often. A few short tests every day fit into a routine more easily than one long session.
- Test at more than one length. Short tests show your top speed, while 3 and 5 minute tests show the speed you can sustain.
